The Quiet Power of Competence and Grace

Posted on May 7, 2025May 26, 2026 By Margie

I’ve spent a lot of time being underestimated. Too nice. Too quiet. Too accommodating. Too colorful. Too fat. Too sensitive. The list goes on—and none of it ever stopped me. What these labels often miss is that kindness and grit aren’t mutually exclusive. You can be soft-spoken and still have steel in your spine. Somewhere along the way, our culture twisted the idea of strength into something loud, performative, and cold. But that’s not the only way to be effective.

I’m not the loudest in the room. I don’t toss around buzzwords or try to dominate conversations just to hear myself speak. What I do is show up early, figure it out, and finish the job while others are still in a meeting about it. I get things done—and I don’t need to throw anyone under the bus to do it. This isn’t weakness; it’s a different kind of power. I believe in eye contact, follow-through, and treating people like they matter—even if the task is mundane or the day is long.

I’ve learned that competence is the ultimate mic drop. Not fake-it-‘til-you-make-it bravado. Not ego. Just real, lived-in, prove-it-daily skill. I’ve had jobs where I ran the printers, packed the boxes, fixed the machines, designed the product, answered the questions, and quietly carried the load of two or three other people. Did I complain? Not usually. Did I take names and keep receipts? You bet I did.

And when people realize you’re the one who actually knows how to keep the operation moving, they start relying on you more. That’s how you build power without asking for permission. There’s something beautiful about being the person who can juggle chaos, meet the deadline, and still say “good morning” and mean it. That’s a rare mix. And I take pride in it.

The thing about being underestimated is: it gives you room to move. Room to outpace, outproduce, and outlast. I don’t need to be flashy. I just need enough space to work. Once I’ve got that, it’s game over. Let them talk. Let them perform. Let them “circle back.” I’ll be over here—smiling, finishing the job, and quietly making sure we don’t fall apart. Because that’s what I do. And I do it damn well.

The Coffee Shop Interview: A Unique Experience that Left a Lasting Impression

Posted on October 10, 2023October 10, 2023 By Margie
This is the best representation that Bing Image Creator could make from my description, it in no way depicts the actual people involved including myself. 😀

Today, I found myself immersed in a rather unorthodox job interview setting: a coffee shop. It was a first for me and I was pleasantly surprised at how much it transformed my entire interview experience. Typically, interviews can induce a feeling of apprehension and nervousness, but this one had a surprisingly different ambience, one that was calming and put me at ease.

Despite a flurry of thoughts running through my mind, I couldn’t help but acknowledge a level of serenity I’d never felt before in such circumstances. If I ever find myself on the other side of the interview table, adopting this unique method would surely be on my mind.

Selling oneself in an interview can be a tightrope walk. There’s this dance of emotions we do: the need to articulate our accomplishments without appearing arrogant, ensuring that while we acknowledge our worth, we don’t diminish it with false humility. I’ve always found it a challenge, but this setting made it a tad easier.

But, the pinnacle moment for me was not the conclusion of the interview, but a delightful interruption. As my interviewer stepped away for a moment, I happened to look over at a table across the way and there sat a young man. We made eye contact and started up a quick conversation. He revealed that he’d been inadvertently eavesdropping on our conversation. Instead of the awkwardness you might expect from such a confession, he offered words of encouragement, complimenting my technique and sharing that he’d been taking mental notes for his future interviews.

That fleeting interaction was a profound one. It wasn’t just about the praise, but rather the realization that even in unexpected places and situations, there’s always an opportunity to learn and to inspire others.

Whether or not I secure this job, I walked out of that coffee shop with more than I could’ve hoped for: a unique experience, the reaffirmation of my interviewing skills, and a heartfelt interaction with a stranger that truly made my day. So, here’s to unconventional interview settings and to Jeremy – wherever he might be, I hope he aces his next interview.

Cheers!

Mastering Marketing: A Deep Dive into Essential Skills

Posted on September 30, 2023October 5, 2023 By Margie

In the vast tapestry of career evolution, adaptability is the thread that binds, and versatility is the pattern that emerges. This article is a deep dive for graphic design professionals contemplating a leap into a role involving Marketing, pondering the alignment of their current skills with this coveted position. Drawing inspiration from my own professional journey and the myriad roles I’ve embraced, let’s explore how going the extra mile in your current capacity can be the bridge to the vast realm of marketing.

Cultivating Client Relationships & Championing a Customer-Centric Approach:

At the heart of any successful marketing strategy lies the customer. Their satisfaction, loyalty, and feedback are the lifeblood of any business. In my previous role at a leading print company, with a client roster exceeding 1,000, I took it upon myself to ensure each client felt like they were the only one. Regular, personalized check-ins, outside of our official nurturing program, were my way of making them feel valued and prioritized. For an aspiring Marketing Manager, this proactive, customer-first approach is the cornerstone for maximizing customer retention and building lasting brand loyalty.

Authentic Brand Advocacy & Meticulous Representation:

A brand is more than just a logo or a tagline; it’s an identity. Ensuring that this identity is consistently and authentically represented is a task I took to heart. My unscheduled visits to local stores, ensuring our products were displayed in their best light, were not mere tasks on a checklist. They were a reflection of my commitment to the brand, a silent vow to ensure our products, and by extension, our brand, shone brightly. This meticulous attention to detail and genuine brand advocacy are non-negotiable for roles demanding a deep understanding of brand representation and advocacy.

Leadership Through Innovation & The Power of Teamwork:

True leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about influence. It’s about fostering an environment where ideas flourish, collaboration is organic, and innovation is the norm. My initiative of organizing monthly dinners for my colleagues was more than just a team-building exercise. It was a platform for open dialogue, for understanding concerns, and for ensuring every voice was heard. This, combined with my diverse roles, especially my significant contributions to the marketing department, underscores the importance of teamwork, innovation, and proactive leadership in a Marketing Manager’s role.

Strategic Revenue Generation & Pursuit of Growth:

Every role and every task has an end goal: growth. My journey was marked by significant milestones, from record revenue growth to strategic client onboarding. These achievements, while impressive, were not the result of chance. They were the outcome of strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. For a Marketing Manager, this ability to identify, strategize, and capitalize on growth opportunities is paramount.

Unwavering Pursuit of Excellence & The Quest for Knowledge:

The road to excellence is a continuous journey, not a destination. My dedication to excellence, reflected in consistently high performance even during challenging times, is a testament to this belief. Coupled with a thirst for knowledge and continuous learning, this ethos is what sets apart good marketers from great Marketing Managers.

Harnessing Data for Informed, Strategic Decision-Making:

In the age of digital transformation, data is the new oil. My role in the success of marketing campaigns, where I meticulously mined data, formed efficient workflows, and executed marketing plans with precision, underscores the importance of a data-driven approach in modern marketing.

Discovering the Power of Content Creation

As I delved deeper into the realm of marketing management, another facet emerged that resonated with my experiences: content creation. The digital landscape thrives on content, and as I reflected on my journey, I realized that I’ve been inadvertently honing this skill for years.

Content isn’t just about putting words on a page or graphics in an ad. It’s a bridge, connecting a brand to its audience. My background in graphic design and project management has often led me to craft narratives, design visuals, and strategize their delivery. Whether it was ensuring the meticulous presentation of marketing products in stores or orchestrating the publication of thousands of advertisement pages, the essence was always content.

But it’s not just about creation; it’s about strategy. Understanding where, when, and how to deliver content is crucial. In my roles, I’ve utilized tools like Mailchimp for targeted email campaigns and platforms like Hootsuite for social media engagement. These experiences, though not directly labeled as ‘content strategy’, were indeed its very essence.

The more I pondered, the clearer it became. Content creation and strategy are not just tasks; they’re powerful tools. Tools I’ve been wielding without even realizing their full potential. As I think about a role in marketing management, I see a landscape ripe with opportunities to harness this power, to connect, engage, and inspire.

Adapting & Thriving Amidst Change:

Change is the only constant, especially in the dynamic world of marketing. The ability to adapt, pivot, and thrive in ever-evolving scenarios is a testament to one’s resilience and adaptability. These traits, honed over years of experience, are invaluable for anyone eyeing the Marketing Manager role.

Conclusion:

The skills and competencies nurtured in diverse roles, be it graphic design, client relationship management, or brand representation, are not siloed. They are interconnected, transferable, and immensely valuable. Whether it’s through strategic innovation, genuine customer service, or authentic leadership, the skills you hone today lay the foundation for the roles you aspire to tomorrow. Embrace learning, cherish growth, and trust in the versatility and depth of your competencies. The world of marketing management awaits.

Cheers!

Author’s Note:

This reflection is deeply rooted in my own professional journey. As I pondered my next career move, the role of Marketing Manager consistently resonated with me. Yet, self-doubt crept in, making me question, “Am I cut out for this?”

Determined to find answers, I delved deep, researching and aligning my competencies with the demands of this role. To my astonishment, my skill set wasn’t just compatible; it was tailor-made for it. This revelation wasn’t merely about job alignment; it was an epiphany about the versatility and depth of my skills.

I felt compelled to share this insight, believing many might be in the same boat, questioning their worth or potential. This piece is a testament to all of us, underscoring that our skills and experiences have immense value, often in realms we haven’t yet explored.

To those grappling with career uncertainties or simply curious about potential avenues, I hope this narrative serves as a beacon. May it inspire you to view your abilities through a fresh lens and recognize the myriad opportunities awaiting you. Remember, each one of us brings something unique to the table; sometimes, all it takes is a moment of introspection to truly see it.

Timeless Treasures: The Joy That Echoes

Posted on September 28, 2023October 1, 2023 By Margie

Life has a way of bringing past passions back to the forefront. Just when I thought my journey had taken a different direction, a recent conversation reminded me of where it all began. After speaking with someone in the stationery field, cherished memories, and deep affection I’ve always held for print and stationery came flooding back.

The Allure of Print

Every touch and every scent associated with stationery evokes a profound emotion within me. The rough texture of a high-end cotton-based folder, embossed with intricate designs and adorned with gold foil elements, transports me to a world of elegance and sophistication. The aroma that wafts from the pages of a brand-new journal, thick and toothy, is reminiscent of new beginnings, of stories yet to be written.

Years ago, an entire room in my home was a sanctuary dedicated to my 40-year collection of journals, Japanese stationery, and note cards. Each item, meticulously curated, held a story, a memory. While the vastness of that collection has now been distilled into a couple of bins, the essence remains undiluted. The mere thought of opening them, of revisiting each cherished item, fills me with a childlike glee.

Crafting Journals: A Personal Touch

Over the years, my hands have danced over paper and thread, crafting small batches of journals for dear friends. In my youth, I sewed them together, each stitch infused with love and care. As my pocketbook evolved, so did my methods, transitioning to a spiral binder in recent times. Yet, the essence of passion and personal touch remained unchanged. Today, the idea that I might soon be crafting these items on a grander scale, realizing a dream I once thought had faded into the annals of time, fills me with a hope that’s both humbling and exhilarating.

A Dream Revived

Stationery, for me, transcends the physical realm. It’s a tapestry of memories, stories, and dreams. Each item, whether a simple notecard or an ornate journal, is a testament to human creativity and expression. This one conversation has rekindled a flame, a dream that I once believed had dimmed. The very thought of immersing myself professionally in the world of stationery, of breathing life into creations I’ve adored for so long, feels surreal.

Diving Deeper: An Excerpt from My Upcoming Book on Print

As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of the countless hours spent penning down my thoughts, experiences, and insights into the world of print. This passion culminated in a book, a labor of love that delves deep into the essence of print. I’m thrilled to share a glimpse of this work with you:

In a world where screens increasingly dominate our lives, the tangible essence and art of the printed page remain enduring. The tactile satisfaction of paper beneath one’s fingertips, the romance of inked words, and the manifestation of human expression all capture a timeless allure.

As a child, my parents worked at a magazine clearinghouse. They would bring home all kinds of magazines, and I would spend hours touching and feeling them. I loved how different each magazine was, some had thin, semi-glossy pages and others had thick, matte pages. It was clear to me, even at that young age, that some of these magazines were meant to be thrown away after a single use, while others were meant to be cherished for much longer.

I didn’t care about the content of the magazines. I was fascinated by the physicality of them. I loved the smell of fresh ink and the feel of paper in my hands. Besides, most of them were about living rich and playing golf, and I was a seven-year-old girl living in a very small town in Florida, surrounded by dirt roads, cabbage fields, and woods. Lots and lots of woods.

I also fondly recall the excitement of receiving the scholastic book fair catalog around that same time in my life. I was enamored with the paper itself. Those thin, slightly glossy sheets which felt wonderful to the touch and rustled with a unique sound. For me, It wasn’t about what was printed; it was the medium itself. Each page is a colorful delight, mesmerizing to my eye. And as a teenager, the thrill continued. Magazines like Metal Edge and RIP Magazine were eagerly awaited. The nostalgia of the scholastic catalogs was there in the one-page posters of my favorite bands, printed on similar paper.

I believe that my early exposure to magazines sparked my lifelong fascination with print. This book is a culmination of that fascination. In it, I explore the rich tapestry of the print world, from ancient techniques of traditional papermaking to modern advances in digital printing. I also examine the resurgence of artisanal crafts such as letterpress and bookbinding, as well as the innovative ways in which print is being used in contemporary art and design.

I also believe that if my parents hadn’t settled for that very first and temporary job after moving here to Florida, I may not be here before you with a 25-year career in print publishing and graphic design. My success in the print industry is not due to chance, but rather to a lifelong dedication to the craft.

Conclusion

The world of print and stationery is not just about ink and paper; it’s a realm of dreams, memories, and emotions. As I stand poised at the threshold of a new adventure, I’m filled with gratitude for the past and a heart brimming with excitement for the future. Here’s to the enduring magic of print, to stories yet to be told, and to dreams waiting to be realized.

A Personal Journey Through Eco-friendly Printing

Posted on September 25, 2023September 28, 2023 By Margie

In 1998, I embarked on my very first graphic design project: a postcard. It was a time when the printing industry was vastly different from what it is today. The awareness and options for sustainable printing were limited, and the industry’s ecological footprint was a growing concern. Over the years, I’ve watched with enthusiasm as the printing world has evolved, making significant strides in sustainability. Today, I’m thrilled to share my insights on how to create a postcard that’s not only visually captivating but also embodies the essence of eco-consciousness.

The Evolution of the Printing Industry

Back in 1998, the options for eco-friendly printing were scarce. Fast forward to today, and the industry has transformed, with numerous sustainable choices available. This shift is not just a testament to technological advancements but also a reflection of our collective consciousness towards the environment.

Laying the Foundation with Eco-friendly Materials

Paper Choice: Choosing recycled paper that’s 100% post-consumer waste is a decision close to my heart. It’s a nod to the trees that breathe life into our planet and a step towards supporting the recycling industry. And always, always look for certifications like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to ensure you’re truly making a difference.

Inks: My love for vegetable-based inks knows no bounds! Derived from renewable sources like soybeans, they’re a wonderful alternative to petroleum-based inks. And let’s not forget water-based inks, which have significantly fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Designing with Purpose and the Planet in Mind

The Beauty of Minimalism: A design that speaks volumes with less is a design that cares. Less ink, less clutter, and ultimately, a postcard that’s easier to recycle.

Steer Clear of Plastic Coatings: Who needs plastic laminates when you can achieve stunning finishes with the right paper and ink choices? It’s a choice that our oceans and marine life would thank us for.

The Art and Science of Eco-friendly Printing

Digital Printing: The efficiency of digital printers, like those by HP Indigo or Xerox, is something I’ve come to appreciate. They’re perfect for short-run projects and epitomize the principle of printing only what’s needed.

The Charm of Offset Printing: For larger runs, modern offset presses have become surprisingly eco-friendly. Machines like the Heidelberg’s Anicolor press have revolutionized the process, minimizing waste and setup times.

The Digital Age of Proofing: Gone are the days of excessive paper and ink wastage for proofs. Digital proofing is the way forward, and it’s a change I wholeheartedly embrace.

Perfecting the Postcard: Sustainable Finishing Touches

Precision Cutting and Trimming: With machines like the Polar N series cutters, the accuracy is impeccable, ensuring that every bit of paper is utilized to its fullest.

Distributing with Care

Thoughtful Packaging: Sending out postcards wrapped in recycled or biodegradable materials is a joy. It’s an action that speaks volumes about our commitment.

The Promise of Carbon-neutral Shipping: Partnering with shipping companies that prioritize the environment is a commitment I’m proud of. Whether it’s carbon-neutral options or renewable energy-powered vehicles, every step counts.

Spreading the Word

One of my favorite parts of any postcard is dedicating a small section to share the sustainable journey behind its creation. It’s more than just information; it’s an invitation to join the movement.

In Conclusion

The journey from my first postcard in 1998 to today has been enlightening. Printing an eco-friendly postcard is a labor of love, a commitment to our planet, and a message of hope. It’s a reflection of values that prioritize sustainability and a testament to how far we’ve come. Every time I hold such a postcard, I’m reminded of the beauty of our planet and the endless possibilities when we choose to care.

Cheers!

Embracing the Future: Canva as an industry disruptor

Posted on September 24, 2023September 24, 2023 By Margie

In the constantly shifting realm of print production and graphic design, innovators consistently emerge, challenging established norms. Canva, an online graphic design application, has carved a niche with its straightforward interface and impressive features. While software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop have traditionally dominated, we know from experience that change is the only constant. Canva is now a force to reckon with. Given my time in the industry, it’s intriguing to see how younger professionals perceive these evolutions, especially when recalling the wisdom that comes from years of experience.

Why Canva is Leading the Charge:

I believe there are several characteristics that make Canva an industry disruptor:

  • Simplicity at its Best: Canva’s drag-and-drop interface ensures users, regardless of experience, can design effortlessly.
  • Diverse Template Selection: From business cards to brochures, Canva’s template variety serves as a muse for design enthusiasts.
  • Teamwork Redefined: In our current globalized work culture, Canva’s collaborative features streamline project management.
  • Design on the Go: Being cloud-based, Canva promotes work without borders – anytime, anywhere.
  • Budget-Friendly Options: With a comprehensive free version and versatile premium plans, Canva champions inclusivity.

A Walk Down Memory Lane:

Having been a part of the print domain for years, I’ve seen titans rise and fall. Adobe Illustrator overtook Macromedia‘s FreeHand and other products, Photoshop surpassed JASC’s Paint Shop Pro, and the biggest surprise for me was when InDesign triumphed over QuarkXPress. Remember Multi-Ad Creator? It was a newspaper publishing favorite!

Interestingly, while reflecting on these shifts, I recall engaging discussions with younger professionals who were quite certain that platforms like Canva couldn’t disrupt our industry’s fabric. There seemed to be an underlying sentiment that my decade and a half of prior experience might not hold relevance in this new age conversation. However, the growing number of ‘camera-ready’ Canva designs I’ve encountered recently speaks volumes about its escalating influence. These patterns make me reflect on my initial doubts about previous industry disruptors. Canva exemplifies how our domain perpetually evolves.

While Canva is certainly paving its way, other promising tools also deserve attention:

  • Figma: An online design tool, Figma prioritizes collaboration and is a favorite among UI/UX designers.
  • Crello: Crello offers animated design templates, serving those looking to incorporate motion graphics.
  • Venngage: For those interested in infographics, Venngage makes visual storytelling intuitive.
  • Gravit Designer: A versatile vector graphic tool, Gravit Designer appeals to illustrators and graphic artists.
  • Desygner: Focusing on brand consistency, Desygner provides solutions across multiple platforms.

Looking Ahead:

The print and graphic design landscape is ever-changing. Pioneers like Canva remind us that evolution propels growth. While Canva may not supplant Adobe Creative Cloud’s vast capabilities, it’s undeniably shaping our design perspectives.

In essence, as the world of graphic design for print continues to transform, it’s vital for professionals to explore new tools and stay updated. Disruptions lead to innovations, revealing untapped opportunities in the dynamic sphere of graphic design for print.

Cheers!
